Yehxil Facts

Yehxil live in vast colonies underground. However, they are much more than simple tunnels and burrows; using only their powerful paws and claws. Yehxil carve out magnificent underground cities. The layout of each essentially follows the same basic plan.

In the very center is a wide courtyard, where garden of bioluminescent plants is accompanied by quiet ponds and streams as well as small, stone walkways. The middle of the courtyard, also known as the "inner sanctum", is located within a small cavern. Rarely are outsiders allowed to enter this sacred place, but all who have seen it agree that it is the absolute most beautiful place in the world. Colonies of phosphorescent bacteria dot the ceiling like stars, and luminous plants resembling reeds and willow trees line a small pond. The water glows faintly with every color of the rainbow as eyeless, shimmering fish swim within. It is a place of meditation and healing, meant to reflect the beauty and tranquility that exists even within the darkest of caverns.

Surrounding the courtyard is a ring of aqueducts which branch out through the city, carrying water from underground springs to the rest of the citizens.

Outside of the aqueducts lie public buildings and shops. They are usually built several stories high so that the structures function as columns connecting the floor to the cavern ceiling. This makes for some of the tallest architectural marvels Mistica has ever known, as the dome of the ceiling is oftentimes several hundred feet high.

Built into the walls of the cavern are the individual homes. These consist of a series of tunnels connecting small rooms. Most furniture in Yehxil burrows are carved from rock or made from pounded soil.

Hanging from the very center of the ceiling is a large stalactite lined with thousands upon thousands of glowworms that brighten and dull alongside with the cycle of day and night on the surface. Smaller colonies of glowworms dot the rest of the cavern, providing additional light.

While the hundreds of tunnels that lead from the city to the surface provide ventilation, Yehxil still prefer not to use fire or any other fuel that produces fumes; all light is provided by glowworms and all energy by either water or good old-fashioned manpower.

There are only a handful of Yehxil cities in existence, as no "new" cities are ever built; those around today were carved over thousands of years by generation after generation of Yehxil.

Each city houses a colony of descendants from the original group who began construction. While Yehxil do visit other cities for trading purposes, they never move about; once born into a city, a Yehxil lives there for his or her entire life.

Yehxil have surprisingly excellent eyesight; combined with finely tuned senses of touch and hearing, it allows them to construct the incredible works of engineering and architecture that make up their cities.

They have extremely good upper-body strength and claws as hard as diamonds - perfect for digging through the ground and even carving solid rock.

A Yehxil's fur is littered with small bugs that both clean it of any dirt and debris and make a tasty snack.

The main part of a Yehxil's diet consists of various insects, worms, and any other bug found underground, but fruits and vegetables - especially from the surface - are considered delicacies.

Yehxil are extremely social within their own colonies. They spend most of their time outside of their burrows among others, be it in the courtyard or perusing shops. Parties and festivals are also extremely common, as they love any excuse to break out the food and wine and talk it up with friends. However, to outsiders they are extremely secretive and shy. It takes a very patient and compassionate person to break through this shell, but once a Yehxil warms up to you, you know that you have an extremely loyal friend for life.
